Day 30 – Casa de Luna to Sawmill CG (Mile 478 to 498)

MM: 498

Trail Miles: 20

Miles Walked: 20.5

Terrie & Joe Anderson, the owners of Casa de Luna, have a Pancake breakfast every morning. There were over 90 hikers there. It’s a great operation. I don’t know how they do it year after year.

After breakfast I headed to the main road through town with Smokebeard. We caught a ride with Fred, a local retiree with a truck. The trailhead was 2miles away. Fred said he gives hikers rides every morning. We stopped to pick up more hikers who were already walking up the road. It wound up being 9 total in his truck.

Leaving Green Valley

I had been leap frogging with Smokebeard, Cherry Bomb, Painter, Fireball and Scooch ever since Big Bear. I fell into pace with them today and had a great time. They’re fun, funny and take regular breaks (something I’m not good at). I hope to hike with them more.

We eventually made it to Sawmill CG. It was pretty windy, but there were about 20-25 other hikers there. It would be another night where cowboy camping was a poor choice – I awoke to a dewy sleeping bag, but I wasn’t the only one. Someday I’ll read the desert humidity better!
